Run BlackGirl, Run!

Wanted to share some pictures and one bout of silliness from my first ever race—last Saturday's Prague Half Marathon.

My time: 2:01:39. Not bad for a newbie runner. :)

It was a good—maybe even great—first experience. Namesake, Ci and her boyfriend came to see me off. (Thanks guys, you rock!)

My starting pace was pretty conservative, probably slower than it needed to be, but I wanted to prevent early flameout. Once I got comfortable I gained momentum. No cramps or stitches; an even tempo with enough energy left at the last kilometer to make a mad dash for the finish line.

And mad it was. The reason? Pure and simple competition. Not race timing as one might expect. Because of my slow start I had already made peace with the fact that I wasn't going to get to the finish line in under 2:00:00—until one particular runner came along in the last two kilometers, and I figured out that she was using me for “target” pacing. Grrrr.

She passed me. A few minutes later, without much of a change in my pace I passed her. Within seconds (really) she “sped up” and passed me. And then—here's where things clicked for me—her pace slowed down again once she was ahead of me. Hmmmm.

My competitive side, which had curiously stayed dormant for the first 19 kilometers, suddenly kicked in: “Lady, you picked the wrong girl to use as your benchmark. I'm gonna drop your ass, and good luck catching me if you can!” As soon as I saw the 20km mark I took off past her and did not look back.

Run BlackGirl, Run!

The effort nearly killed me. I was so sure that my heart or lungs or a blood vessel—something internal—was going to explode. Either that or I would drop at the finish line in a faint.

Then I saw the clock time.... Afterward I realized that I probably owed the woman a “Thank You” (and a “Well Done”). Without her, I don't think I would have tried harder in that last leg.

Next year, I'm aiming for 1:45:00, and healthy competition. :)

Cauky.

Take a wild guess who the race leaders are?

Sprinting for the finish while I'm still at the 10km mark.
The insanity is almost over.
I poached this picture from "Empty Nester", a reader of this blog and recent American Expat to Prague. She came up to me as I was waiting and asked: "Are you BlackGirlinPrague?" :) Second time in two weeks this has happened to me.

You did so good......awesome pics, how did u look so good after ur race! I always look awful. You are so like me, I wldve done the same thing, or rather tried to, if I had some life left in me....the last 1 I did, the NY half, I certainly had no more by the time I got to the finish line.

I hoped to do the dam-2-dam in AMS, but missed out signing up, I'm so gutted!!! oh well!!!

LOL @ "target pacing" and the pic with "guess who the leaders are."

Just wanted to thank you so much for having this blog, period! I've never been to Prague, but I've been looking for a Prague-focused blog so that I could refer others interested in going.

By the way, I just posted something on a festival called "Prague Spring." Please let me know if you are attending or know much about it, as I'm considering it for next year.

Peace.

Just found your blog. Congrats! And great pics, btw.

Have a quick (unrelated) question and hope you can help me.

I'm getting married in Prague in the summer and have been completely shook by what I've read about racism in Prague. As a black woman from Brooklyn, can you tell me the places my family should avoid, and are my fears unfounded?

dear anonymous,
i just spent a few days in prague and didn't experience anything particularly rude or racist. i sincerely doubt you and your family are going to have any problems whilst doing the usual tourist fare of going through town and seeing the sites, and frankly i don't think we black people should plan our lives or are holidays in such a way as to accommodate hate mongers. i hope you enjoy prague and congrats on the wedding!

alllllso anonymous, if you are on google typing in "prague racism" of COURSE you're gonna find what you're looking for. i remember doing that before i moved to slovenia, and frankly it was totally WAY off the mark. while there are certainly some sorta wannabe neo-nazis floating around there are certainly FAR FEWER than are prancing around in the US, and in the almost two years I've lived in Slovenia I've had almost no cause for alarm and doubt I ever really will, and frankly I am glad I didn't let a couple of flickering words on a screen steal this huge and wonderful life from me.

ok, fehrtig. :)

Hi Camille,

Thanks sooo much for the feedback. I was going along thinking happy thoughts about my wedding until my uncle in Amsterdam scared the pants off of my aunt (who's coming to the wedding), with talk of skinheads. All of the feedback has been very positive, so I'm going back to my happy thoughts.

Spending part of our honeymoon in Slovenia (Piran). Looking forward to it!

Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

Hi Blackgirl, nice blog, just came across it. Been living in Southern Africa for the past 5 years and been travelling to other African countries which made me curious about your blog. Just moved to Prague and cannot speak a word of Czech. Congrats on running the half marathon, been wanting to take part in one for years but my level of fitness is going the wrong direction for that to happen anytime soon. Also read about your girls night out in a much earlier blog. Wondering if that's still on?

Hello BlackGirl!

I am a fellow sista-girl traveller who has been an avid reader of your blog for a long time! (I want updates!!!)

I'm writing you because I'll be in Prague next week (travelling there on my own for the first time), and was thinking that it'd be nice to meet up with you for a coffee or something whenever you are free!

I'll be in Praha from the 25 June to the 29! :-)
